How Well Do You Balance Your Life?

There is a need to have balance in your life for good physical, mental and emotional health. Yet, we live in a world that keeps changing almost faster than time itself. The pressures at work easily carry over into your personal life and vise versa. Parents find themselves drained at the end of a day.

When you have many things to do running around in your mind, you can easily feel overwhelmed. To remedy this, it is important to strive for balance and to stay focused. However, sometimes these two goals are in conflict.

How much balance do you have in your life? How much balance do you want to have?

Take this short quiz to see how well you are meeting responsibilities as you recognize and fulfill your personal needs and wants. Read each statement noting if it is “true” for you or “false.”

  1. The only way I can successfully manage my life is to take care of myself physically and emotionally.
  2. I eat healthy food and exercise regularly.
  3. I get check-ups, including the dentist, and take preventative measures appropriately.
  4. I take personal quiet time for myself to reflect on things I’m grateful for or that have gone well.
  5. I spend quality time with family and friends.
  6. I’m aware of emotional signals that tell me I’m out of balance, such as feeling irritable, overwhelmed, or tense.
  7. When I need or want to, I can say “no” to requests for my time.
  8. I listen to and honor my body’s needs for sleep, physical activity, healthy food and humor.
  9. When I’m busy, I still find some time to do the important things I want to do.
  10. I’m generally happy. I regularly experience feelings of well-being, satisfaction, and joy.

Add up your “true” answers and “false” answers. If you answered “false” more often than “true,” look at the sentences you answered “false.”  See if you can think of one or two ways you could do something to make the statement “true.” Practice doing that with one “false” statement at a time until it becomes more natural for you. Then move on to another “false” statement.

It may take you several months to move the majority of your answers to true. However, as you get more balance in your life, you will be calmer, have more energy, be more motivated and resilient. You will find you feel more confident, and you will be a positive force in your life and in the lives of others.
