Life satisfaction is important at any stage in life. However, what seems to bring satisfaction at one stage in life is different at another stage. 

Some interesting new research indicates there is a difference in generations regarding life satisfaction and pleasurable emotions. Five different pleasurable emotions plus satisfaction with life were examined among younger adults with an average age of 18.9 years and older adults with an average age of 74.4 years. The five emotions were:

  • Cheerfulness,
  • Contentment
  • Interest
  • Tranquility
  • Vigor

It is important to know any of the five pleasurable emotions or combinations of them will contribute to satisfaction with your life. 

In addition, the results of the study indicated older adults experience cheerfulness and contentment more frequently than the younger group does. Also, in the older group, tranquility was important for life satisfaction. This was not found to be as true for the younger group does. This was not found to be as true for the younger group. One of the main reasons for these differences may be due to life experiences.

The older you are, the more experiences you have had. You have also achieved more goals in your lifetime than when you were a young adult.

To summarize, this is what is now known for older adults: the feelings of tranquility and contentment are associated with life satisfaction. This means to experience deep satisfaction, asking the right questions will help you make more informed choices about what to do with your time during this stage in your life.   • Which of your strengths help you experience one or more of the above pleasurable emotions?
  • How can you find ways to use those strengths more?

  • Focus on one of the above emotions and savor an experience you have had to deepen that feeling.
  • List ways you feel content or tranquil to experience a deeper sense of life satisfaction.
